Vanilla and dark spirits (not the spooky kind!) have always spoken the same language: warmth, depth, and layered flavours. When a drop or two of pure vanilla extract meets a good Canadian Rye, it doesn’t overpower; it rounds the edges, lifts the aromatics, and reveals flavours already hidden in the spirit. Notes of caramel, oak, spice, and dried fruit become richer and more expressive, almost as if the rye has taken a deeper breath. It’s a small addition that transforms the entire experience, creating a cocktail that feels smoother, more inviting, and undeniably luxurious.

We present to you our take on this classic cocktail, but made even smoother. This Vanilla Old Fashioned brings together warm Canadian Rye, a touch of pure Columbia Valley Vanilla, and bright citrus oils for a drink that feels both comforting and refined. It’s simple, elegant, and lets the quality of each ingredient shine... especially the vanilla.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz of your favourite rye

  • 1 tsp simple syrup

  • 1–2 drops pure vanilla extract by Columbia Valley Vanilla Co

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

  • Orange peel, for garnish

Instructions

Add rye, simple syrup, vanilla extract, and bitters to a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir slowly and deliberately for 20–30 seconds, allowing the flavours to chill, meld, and develop a velvety texture.

Strain into a rocks glass over a single large ice cube. Express the orange peel over the surface of the drink, releasing its aromatic oils, then place it gently along the rim or drop it in.
